Sign2Learn is a new and unique programme in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire to teach and develop Language, Communication and Literacy skills for the under 5's and in Key Stage 1.
We aim to teach children simple signs to help them to develop these skills in a multisensory way. We also want to help schools and nurseries to implement a system which is useful for the integration of hearing/ speech impaired children, children with learning difficulties and children from a non English speaking background.
Sign2Learn was developed with the help and support of Speech and Language Therapists, Child Development Experts and Early Years practitioners.
Our programme supports elements from each of the six areas covered by the early learning goals of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage:
· Personal, Social and Emotional Development
· Communication, Language& Literacy
· Problem Solving, Reasoning & Numeracy
· Knowledge and Understanding of the World
· Physical Development
· Creative Development
Research has shown that children who learn Sign Language have better literacy skills than those who never learned any signs (Dr Marilyn Daniels, Dancing with Words, 2002).
Using gestures (Signs) also helps a child to communicate more effectively. Signing gives your child a kinaesthetic memory aid to recall the word, thus enhancing Speech and Language development.
Our aim is to maximise your child's Literacy, Language and Communication skills in a playful and age-appropriate way.
Using, songs, signs, colourful props and a vast range of puppets, children will learn important skills such as
· turn-taking,
· listening and sharing
· learning about sounds, letters,
· rhyming
· counting
· exploring language.
